There is a need to bring the New Zealand op shop sector together.

Op shops and charitable reuse organisations in Aotearoa New Zealand do not have a peak body or industry association to represent their interests, or bring the sector together for their collective impact, influence and growth.

Charitable Reuse Australia will fill this gap with the establishment of a New Zealand division, designed to support the sector collectively as a whole, and each of the organisations operating within it, individually – as well as advocate for government support and accelerate reuse as we have done in Australia. The New Zealand Division will trade as Charitable Reuse Aotearoa.

Five founding members have helped us develop a bespoke value proposition for Charitable Reuse Aotearoa. Our sincere thanks go to Hospice New Zealand, Salvation Army New Zealand, Habitat for Humanity New Zealand, SPCA New Zealand and Hato Hone St John for their foundational support and collaboration.

Advocacy

Charitable Reuse Aotearoa acts as a centralised platform that can engage with governments, communities and circular economy stakeholders.

We represent the interests of charity retailers, who are leaders in charitable reuse.

On behalf of our member enterprises, we encourage all levels of government to promote reuse, fund innovation and reduce charitable costs.

Capacity Building

Charitable Reuse Aotearoa provides our member enterprises with resources, tools and advice on becoming more innovative and progressive re-users, recyclers and retailers, ensuring they can be financially sustainable and compete within the commercial marketplace.

Building the operational capacity of charity retailers means that they can be key drivers and accelerators of the circular economy.

Education

Charitable Reuse Aotearoa educates and inspires New Zealanders to choose reuse as a simple, cost-effective way to purchase quality items.

By positioning charity shops as high-quality retailers, we present people with an opportunity to give products a second life, reduce their environmental footprint and enable social good initiatives.

Impact Measurement

All Charitable Reuse Aotearoa’s activities are led by data.

We measure the social, environmental and economic benefits of the charitable secondhand economy and our members’ contributions to it.

This helps us build a clear business case for ongoing governmental and community support.
